Visiting Everglades National Park (Shark Valley) from MIA

Everglades National Park (Shark Valley) sits 35 miles from Miami International Airport, putting it within easy reach of any traveler with a long layover, a planned half-day in Miami, or an arrival-day plan that stretches before hotel check-in. By rideshare or taxi, expect the trip to take roughly 105 to 175 minutes depending on traffic.

The national park is best experienced early morning to spot wildlife. Plan your visit accordingly — Miami's midday sun in summer can make outdoor experiences uncomfortable from late morning through mid-afternoon, while the same hours in winter are often the most pleasant.

How to get there from MIA

The simplest option from MIA is rideshare or taxi — both pick up on the lower (arrivals) level of any terminal. Public transit reaches this area through a combination of Metrorail and Metrobus, but the connections add up — for trips this far from MIA, a rental car or rideshare is usually faster and not much more expensive than transit for two or more travelers. If you're staying for more than a half-day in Miami, renting a car at the Rental Car Center opens up the entire region.

What to do while you're there

Plan to spend at least two to three hours at Everglades National Park (Shark Valley) to do it justice. National parks like this one in Miami reward unhurried exploration — you can speed-walk the highlights in 45 minutes, but the texture of the place comes through when you sit, eat, and watch the local rhythm. Bring water (Miami sun is unforgiving), comfortable walking shoes, and a camera or phone with battery to spare. Cash isn't strictly necessary almost anywhere in Miami, but small bills are useful for street vendors and tipping.

If you're combining Everglades National Park (Shark Valley) with a meal or another stop, the surrounding area generally offers good options within walking distance. Use the area's main commercial street as your spine — shops, cafés, and restaurants tend to cluster along it. Most Miami neighborhoods reward a 30-minute aimless walk before settling on a place to eat.

Layover viability

For a layover at MIA, this is too far for a typical layover trip — stick with closer Miami neighborhoods unless you have an overnight stay or a deliberately long break. See our Ground Transport guide to choose the right option for your trip.
